Fred, Velma and Daphne's Tribute Site
In appreciation of the most underappreciated members of Mystery-Inc.
Fred Jones. Velma Dinkley. Daphne Blake. The "straight arrows" to Mystery Inc.'s Shaggy and Scooby-Doo, but without whose help, the majority of the cases would have gone unsolved. So why do they get so little attention from the show's fans?
At the beginning of the series, all four characters had equal screen-time, but as the series evolved, Fred, Velma and Daphne were more frequently relegated to supporting roles, and in 1979, when the show changed format, they were dropped completely from the cast. In 1984, Daphne rejoined the cast, with Fred and Velma making sporadic "guest appearances," but the chemistry among the characters was just not the same. In 1988, the series "A Pup Named Scooby-Doo" reunited the gang as children. Despite garnering high reviews and two emmy nominations, the series was pulled after only two seasons. It would not be until 1998 when the direct-to-video release of "Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island" would reunite the entire cast.
It seems though, that Warner Brothers did not learn from past mistakes. In the latest incarnation of the Scooby franchise, "Scooby and Shaggy Get a Clue," Fred, Velma and Daphne are once again, nowhere to be found. The passing of Joe Barbera in 2006 marked the end of an era, and it is unlikely that we will be seeing any new incarnations of the Scooby franchise anytime soon.
